Inspired by a comment SJ left for on the pomegranate how-to post, I decided to make some pomegranate vodka.

Then I decided to go totally overboard and do one with orange too.

They should be ready in a couple of weeks. Happy holidays indeed!

Pomegranate vodka

Seeds of 1.5 pomegranates

One mason jar

Put the seeds of half a pomegranate in the jar.  Juice the remaining seeds (I used a potato ricer to do this – I’ve heard if you just grind them up in a blender or food processor the seeds can make the juice bitter).

Add the juice to the jar.  Fill the rest of the jar with vodka and shake gently to combine.

In a couple of weeks when it should be ready, I’m going to use this to make something cosmopolitan-esque.  Pomapolitan?  Perhaps.

Orange-infused vodka

Five oranges

One mason jar

One vegetable peeler

Scrub the oranges very, very, very well, and dry them.  Using a vegetable peeler, peel the orange part of the skin off, leaving as much of the white pith behind as possible.

Place the peels into the jar, and cover with vodka.

After a week, I may strain out the peels and add some sugar – kind of limoncello-style.  We’ll see how it tastes – I am hoping to be able to use this like you would Cointreau.  We may end up with some killer margaritas; if nothing else, it can go into the pomapolitan.

SJ, you are a very bad influence.  But you’re still #1.
